Introduction

The Confederation of European Maritime Technology Societies (CEMT) is an independent confederation of professional institutions (those involved in education and professional development) and learned societies (those facilitating the exchange of information) in the field of maritime technology.  It was founded as the West European Confederation of Marine Technology Societies (WEMT) in 1971, and reformed as CEMT in 2003, to reflect the widening membership of the European Union.

Through its member Societies, CEMT is able to call upon the knowledge, skills and experience of over 35,000 professional naval architects, marine engineers and others in the field of maritime technology.  It is therefore uniquely placed to contribute to the success of the European maritime industry.

Purpose

  • CEMT provides a forum for the exchange of information and views by the constituent societies on matters relating to the education and professional development of naval architects, marine engineers and others in the field of maritime technology.
  • CEMT provides a link between the members of CEMT and the European Union, by which the constituent societies may be informed of matters relating to the education and professional development of naval architects, marine engineers and others in the field of maritime technology, being discussed or considered by any body of the European Union.
  • CEMT provides advice when requested by any body of the European Union on matters relating to the education and professional development of naval architects, marine engineers and others in the field of maritime technology.

Membership and organisation

Professional institutions and learned societies in the field of maritime technology in countries that are member states, or who have applied to become member states of the European Union, are eligible to become members of CEMT.

The Confederation is governed by a Council of representatives of each constituent society.  The  Chairman of the Council is a senior member of a constituent society, elected by the Council, and serves for a period of two years. The Council meets twice a year, and is served by a permanent Secretary.  CEMT is registered as an independent foundation in the Netherlands, and is funded solely by its members.

The CEMT Award is presented to individuals or organisations which are considered by the Council of CEMT to have made a significant contribution to the European Maritime industry
